the first one

mother's day

to all you mothers out there, especially my own and everyone else celebrating their very first, happy mother's day. we went for a log walk around albert park lake and then for lunch at south melbourne market, which was all so very lovely despite mae refusing to nap until 3pm. she's a bit delicate at the moment and prone to bursts of tears, with an extremely sore looking, red raw bum from pretty much constant mushy poos (sorry any readers without kids). changing her nappy (which we have to do FREQUENTLY) is met with tears and cries of pained protest - it's enough to break my little heart. i feel like i've really earned my mothering badge the last few days, let me tell you. (and still only one tooth out of the top four has broken through - how long can this go on for?? poor little monkey moo.)

  1. Congratulations on your first, I just had my eighth.

I have 3 kids and with a little help from Dad, I was brought a cup of tea and some jam toast in bed. This was followed by bacon and eggs in the kitchen (thanks to Dad - the kids are not old enough to cook on the stove).

The two school age kids even picked presents from the Mothers Day stall on their own. Unfortunately the 3 year old ate the chocolates she made at kinder before I got them!

Before you know it, it will be you.

  5. Happy Mothers Day to you too! I just had my first one as well. Here's hoping that things settle down for you with your little one very soon (I totally understand as we are in the throes of exactly the same at the moment - up from 3-5am this morning...and so so clingy! Sigh, but totally worth it.) :o)

  6. The first one is really special, but let me tell you, they remain so for each one after. Ella can write now and this year's card, written by her with a picture of me holding her as she was as a babe with a winged love heart watching over us, well forget everything else, she had me at the get go.

  8. Happy first mother's day, I got b/fast in bed thanks to hubby but with a bit of help from my 2 yr old. On the nappy rash, Aus went through a stage like that and my Mum told me to put cold egg white straight onto the rash. It worked over night, all cleared up the next morning. Mums are great like that!

  10. WHen Jack had the worst of the worst diaper rashes I used to pop his diaper into the freezer for a few minutes. That coldness felt good on his raw little bum. It sounds wierd I know, but if you used ice packs after giving birth for yourself you will know what I mean!

  11. Happy mothers day, my first one too! Have you tried some nappy free time? Pawpaw ointment works wonders too.

  12. but a lovely 'mummy-n-me' photograph doesn't show the pain or strain at all :)

( oh, and BTW - don't use the PawPaw - it has live fruit acids, or something in it - not good for raw bot-bots - my health nurse scared me off it )

  15. Happy mothers day!
Have you tried the pawpaw cream (Lucas's, I think - from the chemist) - it is very good for sore bottoms.

  16. happy mothers day!

i was going to suggest pawpaw ointment, but maybe not after reading the above post?

i use Little Innoscents-its australian made, organic, and WONDERFUL..we have never had a case of nappy rash- the slightest little reddening of the 'area' and we apply, to have it dissapear! highly recommend!

  18. Sounds like a lovely day.

My daughter gets a terrible raw bottom every time she gets teeth (even though everyone tells you it's not related). Lots of sunlight & air help (but can be disastrous!). I often used just a pair of trainer pants on her so I could change her straight away as it seemed to be her skin reacting to both wees & poos. Lots of am-o-lin when she wore a nappy made me feel better, not sure if it really helped though!

Ahhh, mothering...here I am telling poo stories on the internet!

  21. Wow! Your first mother's day. What a lovely photo of the two of you.

I have three wonderful children... 7, 4 and 3 months. They're all precious and I feel for you and little Mae. Teething is a terrible time that I'm not looking forward to going through again.

But just when you feel really broken hearted, try to remember the smiles, the smell of freshly washed hair, the cuddles, the pudgy little arms and legs... how lucky are we?

Hi, With our son we had to use lots of different "stuff" for the red bum. We found that some of the nappy wipes would also sting the poor red bum. So instead of wipes we would spay him with Aloe Vera Spray (the type you can get for sunburn) - one without alcohol! and then wipe with a tissue. Hope that helps. -esther.

  23. what a gorgeous photo! Happy mother's day...sounds like you had a lovely one:)
You've had heaps of advice on the sore botty but I thought I'd second the nappy free time. Invest in a pair of huggalugs (or just chop up some long socks)so she doesn't get chilly. I also change super regularly and if using cloth, avoid synthetic liners. Raw silk is fantastic as a liner as it's anitbacterial. I use Gaia skin soothing lotion as well. Hope those teeth pop through quickly!

  24. Hello there, poor you, I know what it's like when it breaks your heart to see them so upset. We've tried loads of organic and pharmacy products and actually find bepanthen works the best.

Hi Leslie, Congrats on the first Mother's Day. I have no bottom tips for you as Chloe was lucky and never seemed to have any problems except to say someone I know just uses little flannelette cloths (to reuse)or cotton balls dipped in water for cleaning (we did this for a while until I got lazy with the washing). Another friend used chamomile tea.

Thanks for your lovley, supportive comment. I remember reading your post about having a second babe and wanting to comment and say just wait and your desire to do it will override all the worries - it does but now I've only 6 weekish to go they're popping out a lot!
