still workin'

new prototype
::security "blankee" prototype, take one::

to combat the boredom associated with not being able to walk any sort of distance due to back agony, i've been slowly working through a new baby design for the past couple of weeks. when i was little, my absolute favourite thing was a fisher price security blanket that had a bunny head that acted as a puppet and a soft, cotton blanket body. i actually had two, a pink one and a yellow one, and loved them both to little, wee shreds. i had it in mind to make something similar for my (coming any day now, surely) soon-to-be daughter and made the above design using a crazy soft light pink cotton lawn and organic cotton/hemp fleece. the feel is perfect, so beyond cuddly but the shape isn't quite what i have in my head and i decided to forgo the puppet aspect, which i think now was a mistake. i'll keep this one for the baby, anyway, because it feel divine and is still quite cute but i really want to get this pattern perfected so i can have a new offering in me olde shop (i'm thinking shop update at the end of august, by the way. i've been working on well dressed oobees, too, but don't want to load the shop up and then go into labour!).

so i gave it another go, in a vintage style nursery rhyme cotton print, but this shape is even less like what i had in mind - too fat and square-ish, i think. back to the drawing board...

prototype #3

...and getting closer, closer. i used a soft, japanese cotton for this one, with vintage cotton accents for the paws and ears to add a bit of interest. she's still a little long, i think and the paws need to be higher, near the head but i've got a fourth cut out now with a slightly revised version of this pattern and i'm going to finally tackle the puppet aspect on the next trial as well. wish me luck!

  1. I LOVE this. My little guy (now 9) had one of the Fisher Price ones. He used to drag it up over his face to sleep. Soooo cute.

  10. These are super cute!! My hot tip to you - make 2 or more identical ones for your babe, then if one gets lost/needs a wash etc, you have another ready to use!

  12. The blanket is a great idea! I definitely enjoy seeing the progression of the design, and can't wait to see the finished project. Nice to hear that you're keeping busy and enjoying your time before the baby arrives. So soon now!

  14. My aunty sent a similar type thing for my youngest when she was born. An idea to consider - the design of that is such that you imagine a square blanket laid flat and then the very centre gathered up to form the head and the corners then drape down. You're probably thinking of something different - but that's another way to consider. I think they all look great and would love them as a gift idea for friends.

  19. I'm not really sure how this whole blogging thing works so you might not even see this since this original post is ancient...

    I had this same bunny when I was a kid (swiped it from my older brother since he didn't like it...chump!) My BF is due with her first baby in July and also had one of these. The other day she mentioned to me that she wanted her baby to have one as well but since they're so pricey on eBay I want to try and make one. Did you manage to come up with a pattern that you wouldn't mind sharing?
