meet lotta

mae's poppy doll

i finished mae's poppy doll!! and have decided to name her lotta, after the swedish design superstar and also lola's best friend. mae's not quite at an age to name things yet so i'm taking the chance while i still can. and she looks like a lotta to me.

yarn hair

the yarn hair went swimmingly. i followed the basic principles in this tutorial to create the look i wanted, with a little fringe and pigtails. picking the yarn itself was the hardest part about it - i wanted a natural fiber that was soft but wouldn't get too pilly or fuzzy over time. after fingering every single dark brown skein at wool baa, i went with the debbie bliss donegal luxury tweed aran, 85% wool and 15% angora, with lovely flecks and tonal variations. it almost has a matted, handworked look to it already so i figure it will stand up to being dragged around quite well.

i did a few alterations to fiona's wonderful pattern by adding two gussets (darts?) to the front of the body and one on the back for a fuller shape; i guess i might have to adjust the clothes patterns slightly to accommodate this but they look pretty forgiving. instead of wool flannel, i went with linen for the body and i added a little red heart because the red thread looked ever so nice against the natural colour. i used a triple stitch on all the machine sewing so she should be nice and sturdy for years of play and i'm going to go over the hand sewing one more time before it reaches mae, just to ease my mind (thanks for the tip, gret). now on to the wardrobe!

  6. ohh, lotta is beautiful. i love that she is named after the design superstar AND lola's best friend (ella is all about charlie and lola right now, we're decorating her doll house to look like their house and i have been give strict orders to make 'charlie and lola' dolls but they'll be called 'ella and sam'). and i love the hair. and the linen. and the red heart. and cannot WAIT to see the wardrobe. such a sweet project!

  7. She's delightful! And so sweet. I reckon the linen will hold better than the wool too. I think the wool is beautiful, but the thread cuts through it more easily and it is heavy. Beautiful hairdo too!

  8. We have a Lotta named after Lola's friend too.

Our Lotta is a fluffy (real) doggy. We thought Lotta was appropriate because of the story where Lola borrows Lotta's fluffy white coat.

Your Lotta is as beautiful as our, which is high praise, because we love her so much!

The red heart is a nice touch.
