cot quilt

cot quilt

i finished my very first quilt yesterday and i couldn't be more in love with it! i'm actually a bit surprised how much i love it as there were quite a few times during the process when i thought "er, this isn't turning out too well, too much turquoise, not enough variation in fabrics, should have hand stitched the binding..." next time i will try handstitching the binding as i think it's the only thing that continues to bug me about this one but still! so cute! and such a bitch to photograph! all wrinkly and stuff! i wish i could show it draped over the side of the very cool 50s cot we picked up last weekend but it's dismantled in the shed until the nursery gets painted - i'm due july 29th so i'm thinking that will be all finished by, oh, july 27th or so. shane has been working on plastering the hallway and installing our lovely new glass sliding door in the kitchen. last night he departed for a week long fishing trip to darwin with his best buddy (i told him to live it up, it may be his last trip for awhile : ) so you may get some extra rambling posts from me this week as i'm missing him quite a bit already.

anyway, back to the quilt: i was planning to finish it this weekend but i've been home from work the past couple of days, feeling a bit under the weather (i seem to catch every illness that goes around my office these days but only at about 60% so i feel not so great but don't get fully, completely, messily ill). i've been maintaining a schedule of 1 or 2 hours in bed and then 1 or 2 hours at the sewing machine, heater on, dog at my side, buffy season 3 reruns on the laptop (damn, it's good. tony and sarah, i'm missing you guys big time while watching these!) so the quilt got finished quicker than intended. that leaves me with a free weekend to finish up a bunch of other projects, especially as i'm essentially housebound today (still mildly ill and have a press check to do for work - scheduled for "sometime" today, which means i need to stay by the phone and be ready to go give the sign off when it's ready).

i decided to machine quilt it with an Xs and Os pattern, hugs and kisses for the wee one (i know, i'm a sap) and i'm really happy with how they came out. here's how the back looks:

i used a super soft white flannel with small turquoise dots (charles parsons for moda, bought at the super bargain price of $3/meter at darn cheap in newport) and it is as cuddly as i hoped. (see, erin, it's really similar to the fabric you showed me earlier this week.) can't wait to wrap the baby up in this and do a proper photo shoot!

  1. It's lovely. And the x & o's aren't sappy at all. What baby (or anyone) wouldn't love to be snuggled down with loads of them.

  2. Leeeeslieeee!(Insert girly squeal of delight).. It's scrumptious, utterly. You are one very clever pregnant person. I'm making my first quilt too but nowhere near as calmly, tastefully or professionally as you.

i am so impressed! what a beautiful little quilt! do you think you'll make a bumper for the crib out of one of those fabrics? what a lucky little girl! and yes, it is actually really similar and so much a better buy, and the fact that it's flannel makes it perfect. i hope you bought more of that flannel to make burp cloths out of. if not, go back and get more!

  6. i already raved about your gorgeous quilt over on flickr, so i'm just going to add this: 29 july is my birthday! so i like to think it's a pretty good day to be born :-) and hopefully your little girl will, too -- though i know that's statistically unlikely to happen.

well done, it turned out lovely! i like the idea of writing a loving message into the quilt, for the baby, like the hugs and kisses! i'm expecting a baby in november, all going well, and can't decide what little project to start... a hat? mittens? wool soaker? quilt? stuffed animal? i'm still crushed tired most of the time.

It's lovely Leslie. Definitely hand bind the next one. It's the most cathartic task. I've even become addicted to hand quilting despite my shoddy stitching. Maybe that's why I've never seen my SIL use the one I made my nephew...
